Space Shepherd

The aim of the SPACE SHEPHERD project is to demonstrate how it is possible to use (and optimize) the data provided by Earth observation satellites that are already operational (as a minimum requirement at least in Europe) to monitor migratory flows in the southern Mediterranean Sea. The experimentation was based on the use of real archive images taken with optical satellites (WorldView-2, QuickBird, GeoEye-1, Sentinel-2) and SAR (COSMO-Skymed).
The initiative was financed by Politecnico di Milano and supported by: Italian Space Agency, Emergency, Military Center for Strategic Studies - Ministry of Defense, Earth Observation Interpretation Center.
The study demonstrated the feasibility of the initially proposed idea. The results were brought to the attention of the Italian and European authorities and the Italian Coast Guard declared itself very interested in its implementation.
