A Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) code for a turbulent open channel flow over a rough wall is developed, as a model for the behaviour of the water- stream on a river bed. In the fluid region the flow is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, while the rough bottom is modelled by spheres via the Immersed Boundary Method.

By gradually increasing complexity we arrive at the final stage where 9216 spheres attached to the bottom surface are considered, for a channel flow with a fricton Reynolds number of Retau=180. Validation is carried out by comparing turbulence statistics with those of a similar study available n the literature.
