Beam

In this section we present the numerical results of Code_Aster solver for a very simple structural test problem, such as the modal and static analysis of a beam.

Problem definition

  • Domain:
    • Homogeneous straight beam of length L = 10 m
    • Circular cross-section with radius R = 0.15 m and thickness e = 0.03 m 
  • Material:
    • Steel
    • Density rho = 7800 kg/m^3
    • Young's modulus E = 2.1e11 Pa
    • Poisson's coefficient nu = 0.3
  • Boundary conditions:
    • Simply supported in bending
    • Fixed in torsion
  • Loads:
    • Nodal force F = 2500 N applied in x = L/2
    • Nodal torque M = 5000 Nm applied in x = L/2

FEM discretization

  • Space discretization:
    • Uniform mesh of POU_D_E Euler-Bernoulli 1D beam elements
    • # of SEG2 elements Ne = 20
    • # of COOR_3D nodes Nn = 21

Numerical results

  • Comparison with exact modal and static solutions
  • Single iteration CPUtime = 3.67 s on ASUS M6000 notebook PC with Intel Pentium M 2.0 GHz CPU, 1 Gbyte RAM, 2 Mbyte L2 cache

  • Beam.tar.gz test problem folder. Uncompress this archive in the $HOME folder and execute ~/Aster/ASTK/ASTK_SERV/bin/as_run ./Beam.export from terminal to start the simulation. Download.
